“I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith” (v9).  The Roman centurion was admired and respected by the Jews because he “loved their nation” and financed their synagogue.  He also had high status in his work, with many men under his authority.  Yet this man was not impressed with himself; he looked at Jesus and knew that, in God’s sight, he was “not worthy” of any special treatment.  Therefore, he humbly asked Jesus, only “say the word” (v7), and his servant would be healed.

“A great prophet has risen among us!” (v16).  When we look at Jesus, and not at ourselves, we begin to have faith for the impossible.
