“Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up” (v1). Much of the meat in Paul’s day (including meat at banquets) would have been ritually offered to idols before being sold. First, Paul explains that idols are not real in the way God is real, so we don’t need to fear their power (v4-6). Second, some believers who have recently repented from idolatry might still feel guilty for eating this meat; we should respect them and not arrogantly flaunt our “freedom” (v7-11).

“Love builds up” (v1). Rather than being focused on our own rights, the well-being of our brothers and sisters should be our priority.
