I Corinthians 14

“When you come together, each one has a hymn, a lesson, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. Let all things be done for building up” (v26). Paul believed that the gathering of Christ’s body was an opportunity for worship, mutual encouragement, and “building up.” Everyone has something to offer – even women. Paul forbids a certain kind of disruptive speech by the women of Corinth (v34) yet elsewhere women prophesy and pray publicly (11:5 & Acts). Paul’s concern is that things are done “decently and in order” as individuals recognize and use their spiritual gifts.

“Strive to excel in building up the church” (14:12). Rather than being the goal, spiritual gifts help us worship Jesus and encourage one another.
