Numbers 30-32

“When a man makes a vow to the LORD or takes an oath to obligate himself by a pledge, he must not break his word but must do everything he said”. (30:2). Scripture teaches that important decisions must not be made rashly or lightly. Our decisions are not simply individual choices; what we say and do always affects those around us (30:6,14). Commenting on this passage, Jesus affirmed the importance of keeping our word and taught that, as people of integrity, oaths should not be necessary (Matt 5:37).

“All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’” (Matt 5:37). Rather than making impulsive promises that are easily broken, God calls us to be people who can be counted on to keep our word.
