Psalm 56

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you” (3). The psalmist’s matter-of-fact mention of the experience of fear teaches us to pray with honesty. Thepsalmist was attacked and threatened “all day long” (2), and the precariousness of his existence and ruthlessness of his enemies drove him attimes to tears (8). Yet he steadfastly returned to his foundation of faith: “in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (4).

“In God I trust and am not afraid. What can man do to me?” (11). We may experience fears, anxieties, and pressures, but we take them to the Lord. No threat can truly harm us; we are secure in him.
