Deuteronomy 14-15
/“Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart” (15:10). The Law instructed the Israelites not to respond to God’s blessing by being generous givers. Although most regular tithes went to the Temple, every third year, the peoples’ tithes were distributed in their local towns to support the landless Levites who lived there, as well as “the foreigners, the fatherless, and the widows” (14:28-29). “In this way”, God promised to continue to bless “all the work of your hands” (14:29).
In Israelite life, the Law brought together productive work, joyful worship, and generous giving. “Then you and your household shall eat there in the presence of the Lord your God and rejoice” (14:26).
