John 16

“Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you” (7). The disciples grieved, thinking about Jesus going away, and he comforted them by promising to send the Spirit. The Spirit would equip them to live in the world: he would explain truth to them, glorify Jesus (12-15), and correct wrong ideas about sin, righteousness, and judgment (8). Jesus was physically going away, but the disciples through the Spirit would have Father and Son both (23-27).

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (33). When we turn to God in times of trouble, his indwelling Spirit helps us experience the peace of Jesus.
