Psalm 42

“Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?” (v5). The psalmist knew that God was faithful, yet there was a time when his heart could not “feel” God’s faithfulness.  He remembered what it was like to lead people in joyful worship (v4), but in this moment he was spiritually dry (v1) and miserable (v3).  Despite his feelings, the psalmist committed to “hope in God; for I shall again praise Him” (v5).

“By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me” (v8). The psalmist’s own feelings did not determine his faith; his trust was in God’s unfailing love and mercy.
