John 16:13-33

“Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice” (v20).  The thought of Jesus dying and leaving the disciples was terrifying (v17-19), yet Jesus reassured them that their sorrow would turn into joy (v20).  After the resurrection, they would come to understand that Jesus and his mission were much, much bigger than they realized, and their joy would be unstoppable (v22).

“I have overcome the world” (v33).  The disciples did weep and lament, yet Jesus’ voluntary sacrifice on the cross overcame sin, death, and darkness, turning our sorrow into joy.
