Mark 8-9
/"I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat” (8:2). The crowds must have known that their food was running out, but staying near Jesus was more important. Jesus responded by multiplying bread and fish. Later, he was exasperated because his disciples were still worried about bread (8:17), when the real danger was the contagious sin of self-righteous religious leaders and immoral earthly powers (the Pharisees and Herod, 8:15).
“But whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it” (8:35). If our own pleasure, power, or security becomes our main goal, we will lose everything; Jesus calls us to abandon everything and follow him.
