Psalm 22

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (v1).  Scorned by others, sick and depressed, the psalmist called out to God for deliverance.  While this psalm follows the pattern of prayer of other psalms, it is also special: it foreshadows the Messiah, who was “poured out like water” and whose hands and feet were pierced (v14-18).  After generations of God’s people suffered and called for help, God’s Son entered our suffering, sharing “the affliction of the afflicted” (v22).

“For kingship belongs to the Lord …” (v28).  Our King conquered by giving his own life, bearing our sins, and winning victory through his sacrificial love.
