11 Samuel 4
/"Here is the head of Ish-bosheth, the son of Saul, your enemy …” (v8). As Ish-bosheth’s side weakened and it was clear that David would win the kingdom (3:1), Ish-bosheth’s captains decided to hasten their leader’s downfall. They snuck in at night and killed the sleeping king. David refused to applaud their actions and, in fact, executed them for murder. Ish-bosheth was buried properly, as David wanted the whole kingdom to understand whose Law he was following.
“As the Lord lives, who has redeemed my life out of every adversity …” (v9). Rather than seizing the throne, David counted on God to secure his future. As we reject sin and follow the Lord, He will fulfill His purposes for us.
