I Kings 12

“But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him” (v8).  King Rehoboam, Solomon’s son, spoke harshly to the people, threatening to discipline them “with scorpions” (v11).  His lack of wisdom contrasted with his father’s golden years, when Israel was united and peaceful, and God poured divine understanding on Solomon.  Solomon’s immorality broke that connection with the Lord, and his son was left to his own (faulty) reasoning.

“How do you advise me to answer these people?” (v6).  By ignoring the elders and ignoring God, Rehoboam missed the path.  When we ask the Lord for wisdom, He has promised to give it generously (James 1).
