Jeremiah 39

"Go, and say to Ebed-melech the Ethiopian … I will surely save you, and you shall not fall by the sword … because you have put your trust in me, declares the LORD” (v16-18). In the middle of the Babylonian invasion, God gave Jeremiah a word of hope for a single individual. Ebed-melech was a court official who served King Zedekiah (ch 38); he was also foreign and a eunuch, which banned him from the Temple. However, Ebed-melech had risked his life and position to rescue Jeremiah from the cistern.

Rather than trying to secure his future with either the king or the Babylonians, Ebed-melech trusted the Lord and acted courageously. When everything around him crumbled, he remained safe.
