Jeremiah 5
/“The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so … (v31). It wasn’t only the poor or the rich who had turned away from God in Judah; unfortunately, the leaders of God’s people were speaking falsehoods and causing problems as well. Rather than preaching truth and protecting the vulnerable, Judah’s leaders were enriching themselves and ignoring the rights of the needy and the fatherless (v28). They were “harder than rock, they refused to repent” (v3).
“Your sins have kept good from you” (v25). Ignoring God’s ways, including His concern for the poor, brings judgment. Yet He is full of mercy, quick to forgive and to pour out blessing.
