Joshua 3-4
/“What do those stones mean to you?” (4:6). In a re-enactment of the crossing of the Red Sea, Joshua led the Israelites across the Jordan River. This time, the priests who carried the ark of the covenant stood in the water, and the Israelites crossed on dry land (ch 3). Just as in the escape from Egypt, God wanted the Israelites to understand (and explain to their children, 4:21) that they could not save themselves by their own strength; the Lord was their salvation.
“That you may fear the Lord your God forever” (4:24). We did not save ourselves by human power, and we can’t achieve real security or happiness by the world’s methods. God is our source, forever.
