John 4

“Whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again” (v14).  John opens this story with the observation that while “Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John”, Jesus himself didn’t do the actual baptizing (v1).  As He told the Samaritan woman, He is the reality that baptism symbolizes; He is living water, the source of new life.  Jesus told the woman that God wants us to know Him deeper than rituals and cultural markers – He wants us to worship in “spirit and truth” (v23).

Like the Samaritan woman, we need more than good advice. Jesus wants to give His own Spirit, which is “a spring of water welling up to eternal life” (v14).
