Esther 1-2

“He gave a feast for all his officials and servants. The army of Persia and Media and the nobles and governors of the provinces were before him, while he showed the riches of his royal glory and the splendor and pomp of his greatness for many days, 180 days” (1:2-3).  Esther’s story could be titled, “Who is really in charge?”  King Ahasuerus commanded a huge, wealthy empire, yet Queen Vashti refused to obey his summons.   Then, his search for a new queen opened the door for a young Jewish girl who kept her identity a secret.

Earthly powers, even kings, cannot stop God’s plans. Through humble people like Mordecai and Esther, “You are the God who works wonders” (Ps 77:14).
