Jeremiah 1-2

“For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water” (2:13). Jeremiah, prophesying just before the exile to Babylon, declared that the people of Judah had turned away from God to “the broken cisterns” of idolatry and the false security of foreign empires. Even Judah’s spiritual leaders rebelled. “Those who handle the law did not know me; the shepherds transgressed against me; the prophets prophesied by Baal and went after things that do not profit” (2:8).

“The fountain of living water” (2:13). The idols of sexuality, wealth, comfort, and power will leave us empty, but Jesus is the living water that satisfies our souls.
