Psalm 119

“I will run in the way of your commandments when you enlarge my heart!” (v32). The beautiful acrostic poem about God’s commands shows us that the psalmist desired more than anything to walk in God’s ways. He knew that, in himself, obedience was impossible, so he prayed for divine help: “Teach me, O Lord ... give me understanding ... incline my heart to your testimonies” (v33,34,36). He asked God to help him “turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; give me life in your ways” (v37).

The psalmist believed that the Lord’s path wasn’t dreary, dark, or narrow, but life-giving. “I shall walk in a wide place, for I have sought your precepts” (v45).
