Proverbs
/“Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “I am only joking!” (v18-19). While laughter between friends is God’s gift, the Scriptures are clear that words, images, or attitudes that demean and harm others cannot be excused by describing them as “humor.” Nor can we hide behind saying things in private that we wouldn’t in public; these are “the words of a whisperer” that cause conflict behind the scenes (v23-28). Our words carry power to lift people up or tear them down.
Rather than whispers and hurtful joking, God calls us to be people who speak “the good word” that brings hope (Prov 12:23).
