Psalm 44-45
/“We have heard it with our ears, O God; our ancestors have told us what you did in their days” (44:1). The psalmist knew his ancestors’ victories were not because of their own sword (3), but rather “the light of your face, for you loved them” (3). Yet in the psalmist’s day, God’s people were suffering defeat, shame, and disgrace (44:9-16). They longed for a king who would “ride forth victoriously” and save them (45:4); instead, their innocent suffering was like the Messiah who would come (Romans 8:36).
“Rescue us because of your unfailing love” (44:26). We know that we are “more than conquerors” through Christ, who rescued us not by a sword, but by unfailing, sacrificial love.
