Luke 16

“No one can serve two masters ... You cannot serve both God and money” (13). Jesus warned the Pharisees “who loved money” (13) that their devaluation of God’s ways and heart was eternally dangerous. The “rich man” in Jesus’ parable (19) had a comfortable, high-status life, but after death he was condemned for his lack of generosity (23). Jesus’ parable about the “shrewd manger” stressed the importance of knowing what is truly valuable, and what is not. “What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight” (15).

“God knows your hearts” (15). Outward appearance and achievements on earth cannot gain us the truly valuable thing – an eternal relationship with God. He wants our hearts to be wholly his, generous because he is generous.
