Psalm 22

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (1). Jesus’ cry of anguish on the cross brought this entire, well-known psalm to the minds of his Jewish hearers. The Messiah was living out the prophecies about him: “All who seek me mock me; they hurl insults ... they divide my clothes among them” (7,18). The psalm also declared God’s commitment to the Son who endured our sin and shame. “For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him” (24).

Dying, Jesus claimed the hope of this psalm for himself and for us: “Future generations will be told about the Lord ... He has done it!” (30-31).
