Exodus 20-22

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery” (20:2). Before giving the Israelites commands for life, God identified himself as the God who had rescued them from slavery. The Israelites, after generations in Egypt, were familiar with multiple false gods and not necessarily loyal to the God of Abraham. But only the God of Abraham had rescued them from their oppressors. He had the power and the right to tell them how to live.

“You shall have no other gods before me” (3). God our Rescuer wants us to trust him and live fully and completely for him. Any other path leads us back to slavery.
