John 18

“I have spoken openly to the world” (20). Seized by soldiers and questioned by religious leaders, Jesus did not threaten or retaliate but answered calmly. He was prepared to “drink the cup” of suffering for the sake of greater joy (11). Peter, when confronted with the same opposition, first tried violence (10), then gave in to fear (17). Like us, it would take Peter longer to understand that Jesus’ kingdom was “not of this world” and could not be achieved by human methods (36).

“Everyone on the side of truth listens to me” (37). The world’s weapons are violence and fear, but we follow King Jesus, who offers courage and peace to those willing to follow him (John 16:33).
