Psalm 42

“My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you ...” (6). Struggling with depression (downcast and disturbed) and exhausted by weeping, the psalmist thirsted for joyful fellowship with the Lord (2-4). He did not immediately find relief (9-10), yet he kept pouring out his soul (4) and seeking the Lord’s presence. Even before healing came, the psalmist “put his hope” in God’s salvation (11) by remembering the stories of God’s goodness “from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon” (6).

“By day the Lord directs his love; at night his song is with me” (8). Even when we feel alone, God is with us. Day and night, his love seeks to lighten our darkness.
