Jeremiah 1-2
/“But my people have exchanged their glorious God for worthless idols” (2:11). Jeremiah prophesied in the 6th century BC, in the last years before Judah. (southern Israel) was conquered by the Babylonian empire. God declared through Jeremiah that Israel was vulnerable because they had forsaken “the spring of living water” and “dug their own cisterns” which were worthless (2:13). Relying on earthly allies (Egypt and Assyria, 2:18) could not help them; without God as their protection, they were not safe (2:28).
Israel’s experience warns us that counterfeit ‘water’ – the things of the world that seem like they will satisfy or bring security – will leave us desperately thirsty. Jesus is the true Living Water our souls crave (2:13).
