I Samuel 8-10
/“Listen to them and give them a king” (8:22). God was the only leader the Israelites needed, but they demanded a king “such as all the other nations have” (10:5). The Lord warned them that a king would claim the best of the nation as his own – the best young men and women to serve him, the best land, the best produce. He would even enslave some of them (8:17). But because the people insisted, the Lord chose Saul, who fit the image of a king (9:2).
“We want a king over us” (8:19). God is the only leader whose authority is always used for our good. When we willingly make him King of our lives, we can live in peace.
