Psalm 72

“May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor!” (v4).  In this prayer for blessing on a king (v1), we see the potential of a world under righteous leadership.  A godly king is the protector of “him who has no helper” (v12).  “He has pity on the weak and the needy, and saves the lives of the needy” (v13).  Because enemies are conquered and violence is suppressed, people can flourish, and there is enough food for everyone (v16). 

Utopia through human efforts is impossible, but “God alone does wondrous things” (v18).  Through loving sacrifice, Jesus defeated our ultimate enemy and proclaimed His Kingdom.
