1 Samuel 22-24

“And now, behold, I know that you shall surely be king, and that the kingdom of Israel shall be established in your hand” (24:20).  Saul had been anointed by God to be king of Israel, but he had forfeited his authority by his faithless behavior.  Now David was the anointed but not reigning king (like Saul, chosen before he had done anything worthy), and Saul realized that David’s actions of faith, courage, and honor – not killing Saul – were truly king-like.

God always takes the initiative in loving us, calling us, and offering redemption we don’t deserve.  Yet we must choose to accept our inheritance and live out our new identity as His sons and daughters (Ephesians 1).
