II Chronicles 1-2
/“But who is able to build him a house, since heaven, even highest heaven, cannot contain him?” (2:6). Usually, temples housed the image of a god or goddess, but Israel’s Temple had no such idol because it was a place of worship to the invisible Creator. The carved wood, gold and silver, and embroidered linens were reflections of God’s bounty in creation and humanity’s best artistic skills, yet the Temple and its furnishings could not be confused with God Himself.
The Temple was magnificent, because “our God is greater than all gods” (v5), yet even “highest heaven” – the universe – is too small to contain Him.
