II Chronicles 26-27

“And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped, till he was strong. But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction” (26:15-16).  Like Solomon and others before him, King Uzziah’s success made him arrogant.  He had spent years following the Lord, building up Judah’s defenses, and “as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper” (v5).  However, he began to focus on himself rather than God, and eventually he even tried to burn incense like a priest, with disastrous results.

“It will bring you no honor from the Lord God” (26:18).  God was willing to give Uzziah honor, power, and fame – as long he stayed humble under God’s authority.
