Job 31-32
/“Is not calamity for the unrighteous, and disaster for the workers of iniquity?” (31:3). Like most ancient people, Job believed that personal troubles were the result of sin or angering God. Job’s own trials were so extreme (loss of all children, wealth, health, and reputation) that he cried out at the apparent injustice. He had been faithful to his wife, loyal to God, helped the poor, and avoided greed and idolatry (ch 31) – why was he being punished? His experience did not match his view of the world.
“Let the Almighty answer me!” (31:35). Job knew instinctively that only God could answer him; God alone can give us peace that “surpasses all understanding” (Phil 4:7).
