Psalm 109

“In return for my love they accuse me, but I give myself to prayer” (v4).  The psalmist had been “attacked without cause” (v3) by those he had trusted; however, instead of rushing to counter-attack, he devoted himself to prayer.  He cast on the Lord all his desire for justice and retribution (v8-20), recognizing that that he himself was not strong enough or wise enough to make things right.   “For I am poor and needy, and my heart is stricken within me” (v22).

“But you, O GOD my Lord, deal on my behalf for your name's sake” (v21).  Our own angry intervention often makes conflict worse, but prayer invites the Lord of justice and peace to intervene.
