Psalm 110

“The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!” (v2).  The New Testament writers recognized this kingly psalm as a Messianic prophecy fulfilled in Jesus Christ (Hebrews 1:13, 5:6).  By dying and rising from the dead, Jesus defeated sin and death and is ruling now, “in the midst of his enemies.”  He accomplishes his rule through the people who “offer themselves freely” to him (v3).  One day, he will “execute judgment on the nations” (v6) who reject his kingom.

“You are a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek” (v4).  The King is also our compassionate high priest, Jesus Christ, who takes us with him into God’s glory (Heb 6:19-20).
