Jeremiah 1-2

“But my people have changed their glory for that which does not profit” (2:11).  Jeremiah was sent by God to warn the Israelites about their precarious situation.  The Assyrian empire was crumbling while the Babylonians were rising, and in this threatening situation, instead of looking to God for help, “the fountain of living waters” (v13), they turned to ungodly allies (2:18).  They ran after idols, forgetting the God who had brought them through the Red Sea and the desert (2:1-8).

In anxious times, the world’s promises and powers seem attractive, but they are “broken cisterns that can hold no water” (2:13).  God alone is our help, peace, and salvation.
