Jeremiah 38-39

“Nebuzaradan, the captain of the guard, left in the land of Judah some of the poor people who owned nothing, and gave them vineyards and fields at the same time” (39:10).  When the Babylonians invaded Judah, they burnt the cities (even Jerusalem) and killed or deported the nobles and land-owning families.  The poorest Hebrews – the same ones whose enslavement had angered the Lord – were left in the land.  Having nothing, they suddenly possessed it all.  

“If you will surrender … then your life shall be spared, and this city shall not be burned …” (38:17).  Instead of trying to save ourselves and, like Israel’s elite, losing everything, we can surrender to Christ and, in Him, find everything (Matt 16:25).
