Psalm 9

“For you have upheld my right and my cause, sitting enthroned as the righteous judge” (v4).  In constant conflict with his enemies, the psalmist was comforted by the fact that, in the end, God’s justice would prevail (v3,6).  The psalmist’s own life, as well as the whole world, would be judged and revealed in the light of God in truth, equity, and righteousness (v7-8).  This was especially good news for the poor, who rarely get justice on earth: “God will never forget the needy; the hope of the afflicted will never perish” (v18).

“Arise, Lord, do not let mortals triumph” (v19).  Our hope is in God’s triumph, the victory of suffering love displayed on the cross.
