I Kings 14
/“And Judah did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and they provoked Him to jealousy with their sins that they committed” (v22). Just as King Solomon had accommodated pagan worship in the land, his son Rehoboam allowed devotion to goddess Asherah (which included terrible rituals) and even male religious prostitutes (v23-24). In the north and the south, God’s people behaved exactly like the nations He had driven out of the land (v24), and so Shishak of Egypt came and plundered the gold of the Temple (v25).
“He took away everything” (v26). Sin naturally causes destruction, loss, and grief, but God calls us to righteousness because He loves us.
