Jeremiah 35

“I have spoken to you persistently, but you have not listened to me” (v14). God commanded Jeremiah to use the Rechabites (a particular clan) as an example of obedience, in contrast to the general disobedience of the Israelites. The Rechabites’ ancestor had commanded them to live nomadically, not to cultivate farms or vineyards or drink wine. Generations later, the Rechabites were still living in tents (v8) and respecting their founder’s words. Yet Israel had been given commands by God Himself and had rejected His ways (v15).

“I have called to them and they have not answered” (v17). Israel closed their ears to God’s voice, missing out on mercy. He calls us “persistently,” offering forgiveness to all who respond in faith.
