Jeremiah 36
/“Now after the king had burned the scroll with the words that Baruch wrote at Jeremiah's dictation …” (v27). Jehoiakim, king of Judah, didn’t want to hear Jeremiah’s words of judgment. Jeremiah’s prophecies had been read aloud publicly, so people would have a chance to change their ways (v7), but this angered the king. When the prophecies were read aloud to him in the privacy of his chambers, he cut up the scroll and threw it in the fire. However, he could not change reality (v23).
“Take a scroll and write on it” (v2). Whether we accept it or reject it, God’s Word doesn’t change. The Scriptures proclaim truth so that “everyone will turn from their evil ways” (v7).
