Isaiah 5

“For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel …” (v7). Israel was like God’s vineyard which He had lovingly cultivated, but it yielded “wild grapes” (v2). Israel were supposed to be a blessing to the nations, but when God “looked for justice … behold, bloodshed” (v7). Rather than showing mercy to the poor, rich Israelites accumulated houses and fields (v8). They reversed good and evil and thought themselves “shrewd” (v21). Isaiah warned them that God’s wrath was near (v24-25).

“Man is humbled … the eyes of the haughty are brought low” (v15). God’s judgment turns everything upside down. He is honored not by worldly success, but when we imitate His justice, holiness, and righteousness (v16).
