Psalm 29

“Greatly have they afflicted me from my youth, yet they have not prevailed against me” (v2). Israel was born as a nation when God rescued them from Egypt, and, in many ways, they had been “afflicted” or threatened and attacked throughout their history. However, as long as they put their trust in God and not in their own armies or weapons, they were safe. No matter how powerful the enemy, God prevailed on their behalf. “The Lord is righteous; He has cut the cords of the wicked” (v4).

God’s enemies, according to the psalmist, are like grass which quickly withers (v6). But when our roots are deep in Christ, He helps us thrive and produce fruit (Psalm 1).
