Romans 2
/“Therefore, you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges” (v1). Paul addressed the human tendency to point out other people’s sins and ignore our own. In this case, his Jewish brothers found it easier to condemn the sins of Gentiles than to confess their own “hard and impenitent hearts” (v5). Paul warned those who thought they were “a light to those in darkness” (v19); their self-righteousness was storing up “wrath” for themselves. Outward conformity to the law (as in circumcision) could not heal their hearts (v28).
“God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance” (v4). When we understand God’s undeserved kindness toward us, we extend the same grace instead of judging others.
