Psalm 72
/“May all kings fall down before him … For he delivers the needy when he calls, the poor and him who has no helper” (v11-12). This prayer for a king expresses the characteristics of a truly righteous ruler. A good king “defends the cause of the poor” (v4) and conquers enemies; under his leadership there is peace and “abundance of grain” (v16). The only Ruler who can do all this is the King of Kings: “May he have dominion from sea to sea” (v8).
“In his days may the righteous flourish, and peace abound” (v7). Despite earthly chaos, our good King is already reigning. As His servants, we can experience His peace as we wait for His return.
