Luke 1

“You shall call his name Jesus … the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David … of his kingdom there will be no end” (v31-33). The first century Jews were hoping and longing for the Messiah to come with power, defeating their enemies and setting up his throne (v51,71).  They also believed God’s promises that He would show “tender mercy” to Israel (v78).  No one could imagine that power and mercy would come together on a cross.

Jesus the Promised One does indeed rule and reign.  He conquered our enemies, sin and death, by giving up his own life, and He lives forever to “guide our feet in the way of peace” (v79).
