Luke 4

“And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” (v36).  Jesus’ authority was not simply due to His being God’s Son.  Rather than live in our world with all the unmistakable glory of His divinity, Jesus took on our weakness and experienced temptation.  He met the devil in the desert not with blazing signs of power, but hungry and dependent on the Holy Spirit.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me … to preach good news to the poor” (v18). Jesus’ triumph is “good news” because He chose to be counted with us, so that we can share His victory.
