Luke 10
/“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart …and your neighbor as yourself” (v27). The lawyer who approached Jesus knew the Word of God, and he correctly identified the main ideas of the Law. Yet he wanted to define “neighbor” in a way that would allow him to be righteous without sacrificing anything. Jesus turned his question upside down by telling a story about a Samaritan (scorned by Jews) who went beyond social obligation to show extraordinary love.
“The one who showed him mercy” (v37). Loving our neighbor can’t be limited to what is easy or comfortable. Jesus calls us to pour out what we have received: undeserved mercy, grace, and kindness.
