John 2
/“Zeal for your house will consume me” (v17). The disciples saw this prophecy fulfilled when Jesus drove out those who were making the Temple a place of commerce. Focused on profits, they had forgotten that God’s house was to be a place of worship and prayer, and Jesus’ passionate action, like the Old Testament prophets, was intended to return people to a clear vision of the Father and His purposes in the world. Even Jewish religion – the background story of the Messiah himself – needed cleansing and transformation.
“Many believed in His name” (v23). Jesus disrupts the status quo and overturns human ideas about God. But for those who are thirsty, He is the water that satisfies.
